Script quote along the side of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black script phrase reads you will walk with me always along the outer side of a foot, running from near the ankle towards the toes. The thin, joined strokes are uniform in weight and the lettering is slightly slanted. The bare skin and purple nail polish sit against a light woven straw surface, with the photo taken from a close, angled view.

The card came out of the lining of her good coat on a Tuesday, when I was finally brave enough to take the coat to the cleaners. Her handwriting, slanted and quick, the way she signed birthday cards in biro that never quite stayed on the line. You will walk with me always. No date, no name, just that, folded twice and tucked where a woman keeps a bus pass.

I took it as an instruction, which she would have laughed at. Every night after the last tram on Corporation Street I walked the long way home, past the shuttered fishmonger and the chip shop with its steamed-up glass, over the canal bridge where the water smells of diesel and wet bricks. I counted the lamps. Forty-one from the station to our door. She had always said I walked too fast and never looked up.
On the forty-first lamp a boy of perhaps nine was sitting on the kerb with a grey terrier, both of them waiting for someone who was late. He asked me if I was lost. I said no, I was only going home, and he asked if I always walked alone. I said I didn't, not really, and I heard myself say it and felt foolish, the way you do talking to a stranger in the dark.
I went in and put the kettle on and sat with the card on the table, and for the first time the flat did not feel like a place where something had been taken away. It felt like a place where someone had gone on ahead and was waiting, with her head on one side, for me to look up. I looked up. The ceiling rose had a crack shaped like a river, which she had always pointed out to guests, and I laughed out loud at it.
