Never Again script tattoo on a limb

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the words Never Again written in a flowing black script across the skin of a limb. The letters are joined with long, sweeping connecting strokes, and the linework appears smooth and even with some soft shading inside the letter forms. The ink is entirely dark, and the text sits centrally across the frame against a slightly blurred background of tiled flooring and fabric.

The brass bell on the quay was still swinging when I came up the slipway with the lamp, my boots full of harbour water. I had told Tom to stay ashore. I had said it in front of his mother and the mackerel men, and I said it again on the steps, loud enough that the gulls lifted off the bollards. Never again, I told him, and I meant the boat, and the sea, and the way he always walked toward the weather as if it owed him money.

The Marigold had gone out on the afternoon tide with two crab pots short and a sky like wet slate. By dark the wind had come round to the south-west and the lighthouse beam was swinging across the water like a broken clock hand. I sat in the net loft with my back to the tarred rope and counted knots in the twine to keep my mind from the harbour. Mrs Penrose from the chandlery brought tea in a tin mug and didn't say anything, which was the kindest thing anyone did that night.

Tom came up the slip at first light, grey as the stones, dragging one pot behind him on a line. He didn't look at me. I took his cold hand anyway, and he let me, and after a while he said, "You can't unsay a thing like that, Mair."

"Then I'll say it differently," I said.

I took the chalk from the board where we tally the catch and wrote the words again on the slate beside the door, looping the N the way my mother taught me, so that anyone walking past could read them and the sea could read them too.
