A red rose with green leaves and a stem runs vertically across the skin, with the script words The Beauty Is Found Within written along the stem. Pink petals fall below the rose and small dots are scattered around it. The shading is soft and blended, with bold red and pink tones against the natural skin.

Mr Okonkwo in bay three had been asking for a rose since Tuesday. Not a bunch, he said, one rose, red, the kind his wife used to pin to her coat on Sundays. The florist's slip said the order came from a daughter who had not visited in eleven years and wanted it delivered before the morning consultant. He did not thank me. He looked at it for a long time, then tipped his head at the card taped to the beaker, the handwriting spidery and shaky. Something about the beauty being found within. He laughed, a short dry sound that turned into a cough. 'She always did hide her words where nobody would bother reading,' he said.

At six the rose had dropped three petals onto the blanket. I gathered them into my palm, then, feeling foolish, tucked the palest one into his hand. He closed his fingers around it without opening his eyes. I left it there, curled against his knuckles, and went to find my mop.
