Script lettering design on grid paper
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil sketch of the phrase Generic Life Advice You've Heard Before, set in flowing, looped script with decorative swashes around the letters. The lines are dark and confident, with thick and thin strokes and some shading along the letter edges. The words fill a rounded block on squared grid paper, and a black brush pen rests diagonally in the lower right corner.

Marjorie Penhallow had lettered forty-one boards for the Sandpiper Guest House, and Mrs Gedge still wanted changes. "Not that one," the landlady said, tapping the grid paper on the kitchen table with a floury finger. "Guests read it on the way to their kippers and think I'm being clever at them."

Marjorie uncapped the black brush pen and started with the loops, the way her father had taught her on the backs of tide tables. The words wanted to sit in a rounded block, so she pushed the L of Life into the A of Advice until the two letters shared a stroke. Out on the promenade, gulls were fighting over a bag of chips. "Generic," she read aloud. "Life. Advice. You've heard before." She set the pen down. "Everyone's heard it before, Mrs Gedge. That's rather the point of advice."
Mrs Gedge didn't laugh. She pulled out a chair, sat down heavily, and looked at the sketch for a long time. "Then paint it anyway. Half of them come for the sea and the other half come because somebody tells them something they already knew, and they feel better for hearing it from a board."
On Saturday the sign went up on the railings, swashes curling round the words like weed round a mooring. Marjorie had let one flourish trail off the final d of Before, thin as a fishing line. A man in a yellow cagoule stopped, read it twice, and laughed out loud. Then he went inside to ask whether there was a room free for another week.
