Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A back-view photograph of a woman with dark shoulder-length hair, one arm raised to her head. A vertical line of thin, cursive script runs down the centre of her back, in black ink. The monochrome composition is softly lit, with a bed and white wall in the background.

The island has gone quiet since the last boat. Mrs Kerr has taken to sitting at her window with the good cups out, as if somebody might come up the hill for tea. It is pinned above the bench where the light falls. When the boat comes in on Friday, come and look at it before you go up to the house. I want to see your face when you read it, and I want you to be the first to tell me whether I have spelled it right. Your brother, Calum.
