Branching roots tattoo across a woman's back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a woman's bare back, with her head turned away and one hand raised to her hair. Thin, dark, branching lines run diagonally across the shoulder blades and down the spine, resembling roots or tree branches. The image is monochrome, with soft shading on the skin and the lines standing out sharply against it.

The plums were dropping by the third week of August, and Dad had stopped pretending he could keep up with them. He walked the rows of the old Kent orchard with a bucket on his hip and a grafting knife in his back pocket, grumbling about the rootstock that had gone sour under the Bramley. "It wants cutting back to the good wood," he said, and I held the ladder while he sawed through a limb as thick as my wrist.

Under the bark the wood was dark and stringy, splitting off into threads like something that had spent a century feeling its way towards water. Dad said that was the thing about old roots: they remember more than the crown does. He took a scion from a young cutting I'd brought from the nursery in Maidstone, slit the stock with one clean diagonal, and bound the two together with raffia that smelled of hot dust. I asked whether it would take. He said it would take if we left it alone.
We left it alone. Through September the wind came off the Weald and rattled the empty hop poles along the lane, and I went down most evenings with a torch to check the binding, though there was nothing to see but pale wax and wet leaves. Dad stayed in the kitchen with the radio on and his boots by the Aga.
In October I found a single green bud sitting on the union, no bigger than a fingernail. I pressed the dark stock with my thumb and it was cold and certain, and beneath the soil the old roots were still branching out in every direction, holding the whole orchard up without anyone needing to see them.
