Constellation tattoos across neck and chest

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a woman tilted back with her head resting low, showing her neck, shoulders and upper chest. Thin, dotted fine line constellations are spread across the neck, collarbones, chest and upper back, with small star points joined by straight lines. The soft directional light and dark background focus attention on the linework, and a dark garment covers the lower part of the frame.

The yard was white with rime by four, and the lamp in the lambing shed threw a yellow square across the straw. I went down the row of pens with a bucket of warm water over one arm, checking the ewes who had started to paw and groan. Dad had taught me that you do not hurry a ewe. You wait and let her decide, and I was still learning how long waiting could take.

Grandad Ambrose used to stand me at the top of the hayloft ladder on clear nights and make me join the stars with my finger. He called the Plough a wagon and the Hunter a man whose belt never sat right. He said a shape was only a promise that you would keep looking. He drew the same lines in pencil on the backs of feed invoices, then used the paper to light the pipe he was not supposed to have.

That January the lambs came early and two did not stand. I sat in the straw until my knees went numb and the sky over the top field turned the hard black it gets before dawn. I stepped outside to look for the Hunter and found instead my own breath hanging in front of me, freezing to the gate rail, while the stars came out one by one through it.

I pressed a thumb to the cold wood and drew his lines through the frost, belt, sword and shoulders, until the shape held for as long as it took to count to nine. Then the sun came up over the barn roof and the rail ran wet, and the lamb in the corner pen lifted its head and bleated for its mother. I went back in and fed it.
