The nights have been clear this month. Every evening since the Lark went out past the breakwater, I have counted the little blue stars over the water, and last night there were so many I lost count at forty and started again. Captain Pell swears the one bright star above the rest is his wife's eyes, so I have drawn it in ink on the envelope, above your name, so the postmaster will know this came from a house with a lamp in the window.

The sign-writer who used to paint the boats has gone to Aberdeen, and nobody else in town can do a proper curl on a capital. I tried my own hand on the sea wall with a pot of tar and a stick, and the letters looked like a drunk man's signature, but the tide has not come to take them yet. I have left them there. If the Lark does not come round the point by Sunday, walk down to the wall and look at what I wrote.

Keep the lamp lit, love. I will be home before the tide turns. And if I am late, you will know I was counting the blue lights all the way back.
