Family script lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo spells the word Family in a flowing, joined script with large looping capitals and swashes. The lines are solid black with even weight and smooth curves. The skin is a warm tone and the arm fills most of the frame against a soft, neutral background.

The fair moved every summer, from Suffolk to the Fens to the cliffs at Bridlington, and every stop meant a new board to letter: the Waltzer, the grand mirror, the sign over the candyfloss hut. Dad never signed his work. He said the letters belonged to the family, and the family was whoever stood in the field when the lights came on.
Last autumn the Waltzer was sold to a firm from Kent, and the new owners wanted the name in a clean printed type they could order off a computer. I did not argue. I took the old brushes home to the flat above the chippy in Ipswich and found his sketchbook, the same capital drawn over and over on every page, the loops growing looser as his hand got older.
I painted one last board for my sister's kitchen wall, a plain sheet of ply she had sanded for me. I wet the brush, blew a little dust off the surface, and wrote the word the way he taught me, with the long swash pulled out from the F like a rope paid through a hand. When the last loop of the y curled back under the other letters, I sat on the step and waited for the gold to dry.
