Script lettering on abdomen with heart pin-up thighs
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a lower torso wearing black and white houndstooth-patterned underwear, with large script lettering with decorative flourishes across the abdomen. Two heart-shaped frames on the thighs each contain a vintage-style pin-up woman, shaded in grey tones. The lettering uses bold, shaded strokes and the thigh tattoos have softer shading, all in black and grey on a light skin tone.

Keep your wrist loose, Dougie, or the loop on the W goes heavy and the whole word sits in the paint like a cow in a ditch. Mrs Halloran wants it across the ticket hut by Saturday, and she wants it swinging, the way the gulls swing over the harbour wall.

He had the mahl stick across his knuckles and his tongue between his teeth, the way his father used to work, and I left him to the flourishes. I took the two heart boards to the back wall instead. Hearts were easy when you were angry at someone, and I was angry at everyone that spring. One girl held a hand mirror up to her own face, the other wore her hat low enough to hide a question. I gave them grey shading the colour of the dock at dusk, because nobody in Dunmore ever paid a shilling to see a bright thing.
By Friday the lettering was dry and the girls were finished. Dougie stood back with his arms folded and said the last few letters looked like a dare. I told him that was the point of a sign. Mrs Halloran paid us in tea and a biscuit tin of coppers and asked for nothing else.
On Saturday morning the hut was empty, the key under the mat and a postcard tucked behind the glass. It showed a train halfway up a mountain. On the back, in her looping hand, it said the last stroke is yours to finish, Dougie. I still haven't told him which one.
