Black and grey realism rose tattoo with leaves and cursive script on a person's lower abdomen, with a faint red flower partly visible above.

Shaded rose with script on the abdomen

Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo

A large shaded rose with layered petals and leafy stems sits on the lower abdomen, with cursive script beside it that reads partly as Heart and is cut off at the edge of the frame. The rose uses soft grey shading and dark outlines, and a faint red and orange flower is visible at the upper left. The photo is taken close up, with a hand and clothing at the top and the tattoo filling the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Lil had pinned the grey silk rose to my lapel at seven, because the hall's lamps turned every colour to ash and she said a dull flower would at least look honest under them. By half nine the petals had gone soft at the edges from the heat coming off the bodies on the floor. I kept touching it anyway, the way you check a pocket for a ticket you already know is there.

The Palais on Dock Street ran a Saturday dance for anyone with a shilling and a clean collar, and the band came up from Hull every week in a van that coughed like a smoker. Stan on the trombone had a letter in his jacket he kept promising to read me. It began with the word Heart, underlined twice, and the rest was smeared where rain had got into his inside pocket on the walk over. He said it was from his sister in Leeds. He said a lot of things between tunes.

At quarter to eleven the bandleader called a last waltz and the floor thinned to couples who had given up pretending. Lil stood by the cloakroom with her coat already buttoned, glaring at the clock above the bar as if it owed her money. I crossed the boards with the rose in my hand, its stem bent where I had gripped it. I did not give it to her. I slid it into the coat pocket where Stan's letter was kept, and the two of them sat together against the lining, one folded and one drying.

Outside, the tram bell rang twice and nobody on the pavement looked up.
