Script quote across a shoulder
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quote, reading heaven has taken my hero, runs diagonally across the upper back and shoulder. The lettering is thin, even and monoline, with a slight slant and the words joined in a handwritten style. The image is in warm tones, with the subject's hair in a bun and a large silver earring visible at the edge of the frame.

The stonemason in Ashby would only cut what he could read, so Nell Harrow spent three nights at the kitchen table copying words onto the backs of coal bills. Her mother wanted a line from the hymn book. Nell wanted the thing her father had actually said, muttered at the back door with his boots in one hand and the dog's ear in the other: heaven has taken my hero. She wrote it slanting and joined, the way he signed his name on the pay slips, and crossed out the last word twice before she trusted it.

The pit had been shut eleven years, but the men still came up Clough Lane at the change of shift out of habit, and on the Thursday Mr Bellamy from the lodge knocked with a folded banner under his arm. The lodge had painted it for the funeral. Nell did not want it, and he knew that, so he only unrolled the bottom edge across her table and stood back turning his cap.
Someone had lettered the words in gold, upright and tidy, nothing like her father's hand. Some clerk in the lodge office had decided a hero needed capitals. Nell looked at the banner for a long time, then at her coal-bill draft beside it, the slant of her own letters leaning toward the window.
"Leave it with me," she said. When he had gone she took the pencil, wrote one more line under her draft in the smallest hand she had, and folded the bills into her apron pocket. Her father would have laughed at the gold. He would have said the dog could spell better. Then she went out to the yard to look for a chisel, because the mason could cut her version or nothing at all.
