Infinity symbol and hand tattoos in a mirror selfie
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A woman takes a mirror selfie in a cream crop top, holding a phone with a patterned mandala case in front of her face. The visible tattoos are black ink, including a small infinity symbol on one finger and a larger ornate design spreading over the back of the hand and onto the wrist. The image is warm-toned with soft lighting and the hand and tattoos are the main focus.

In the hall at Kersley the dances ran past midnight, because the fiddler Tom Venn would not lay his bow down until the floor had gone round once more. The caller, a thin woman named Abigail Marr, kept the figures moving with a stub of charcoal in her apron pocket. Every dancer who asked for a last set got a mark on the back of the hand, a loop drawn tight like a figure eight lying on its side, so she could count them out at the door.

One winter a stranger came in from the snow with pale lace-work already on his knuckles, and asked for the last set. Marr took his hand and drew the loop over the top of it, then a second loop round the wrist, and the pattern spread from there in curls like frost across a windowpane. He danced until the lamps guttered. When the others had gone home he was still turning, slower now, and Venn played on because it seemed rude to stop.
In spring the hall was locked and the key given to the river. Nobody could say who the stranger was or where he went, only that the ink would not wash off, and that on certain nights, when a fiddle sounded from the water, those who bore the mark found their feet moving before they knew they had stood.
Marr kept the charcoal until she died. They buried it with her, wrapped in a handkerchief, so the set could be finished somewhere else.
