Small script tattoo on lower back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person in high-waisted denim shorts and a white crop top takes a mirror selfie, showing a small tattoo of several lines of black script on the lower back above the waistband. The lettering is fine and sits in a loose, slightly stacked arrangement, with the words hard to read at this size. The image is in natural light with a plain white background, and the ink is black and grey only.

Dear Tom, the Mary Ellen came in short again on Tuesday, and Dad has stopped pretending the nets are the problem. I'm writing this at the kitchen table with the ink Mrs Oakes lent me, because pencil keeps skipping on the paper.

You asked what I've been doing with the afternoons. I've been copying out Mum's notebook, the one with sayings written on the backs of the tide tables. Some are only a word long. "Mind the step, mind the sea, mind yourself." Others run down the page in a crooked column, the lines pushed together where she ran out of room, so I've had to stack them the same way or they lose their sense.
Yesterday I got to the last one, the one she wrote in the margin the winter you left. It's three lines, and the middle one is smudged where the tea went over. I've tried it four ways. Each time it comes out as a different promise, and I can't tell which one she meant. Dad says leave it. Gran says read it aloud and the right one will sound like her.
So I read it aloud to the empty scullery, and all it sounded like was the tide going out under the slipway. I've copied all four versions onto the back of this letter. Tell me which one sounds like her, and I'll stop pretending the ink is the problem too.
