Script tattoo on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small cursive script tattoo runs vertically along the side of the torso, just above the waistband of the jeans. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading, and the lettering is too small to read clearly. The photograph is a close, cropped view of the torso in a black and grey palette, with a dark textured wall behind.

You learn the forest's edge by the post. Letters come down from Hollin Wood in a tin box nailed to the gatepost at Ashcombe, and you carry them up the lane because nobody else will pass the last cottage after dark. The hand on every envelope is the same, narrow and slanted, as if the writer were leaning into a wind that never reached the village.

The first letter you open holds no news, only a single word written small in the corner of the page, the ink so fine you have to tilt it to the lamp to see it at all. You copy it into the back of your ledger, letter by letter, and cannot match it to anything. Mrs Pender says it's a name. The schoolmaster says it's Latin, badly spelt. You decide it was meant for one person, and that you ought not to have read it.
Each week the box holds another envelope, and each week you are a little slower on the lane. You start leaving the lamp burning in the post room window so the trees can see it. Past the oaks, a light answers now and then, or perhaps that is only the moon on the millpond.
One February the box is empty. You walk to the edge of the wood and find a single oak leaf pressed flat on the stone wall, the same slanted hand inked along one vein. You turn it over. The word is there too, and this time you can read every letter.
