Script line tattoo down the spine

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with long dark hair is photographed from behind, showing a narrow vertical line of small black script lettering down the centre of her upper and mid back. The linework is fine and even, with the words set closely together in a single column. The skin is warm toned against a plain pale background, and the image is composed to centre the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had got into the water trough again by the time you reached the top gate, so you broke the skin of ice with the heel of your boot and let the ewes push in around you. Your father never bothered with the ledger in January. He said the sheep did not care what month it was, and neither did the weather. But he wrote everything else down, on the backs of feed invoices, on the lambing board nailed inside the barn door, in a hand that leaned forward as if it was late for something.

Today the board is blank. Someone has wiped it clean, and you know it was you, last Tuesday, when the kettle boiled over and you thought you were being sensible. Now you stand in the cold with a pencil behind your ear and a sheet of paper flattened against the feed bin, trying to remember the column he used to run down the middle of every page, a single line of small words he never explained, top to bottom like a fence post.

You find it scratched into the inside of the tack room door, where he must have used a nail years ago, when you were too small to ask what it meant. You copy it out letter by letter, lips moving, the ewe numbers forgotten in the cold. It is not a list of anything. It is a sentence, and the last word has been rubbed away where his coat sleeve brushed the wood every morning for thirty years.

You stop. The sheep have drifted down toward the barn, dark shapes against the white field. You write the missing word yourself, the one that fits, and walk down to meet them with the paper folded in your pocket, already warm.
