Vertical script tattoo along the spine
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A back view of a woman with long dark hair and a thin chain necklace, showing a vertical line of small black script running down the centre of her spine. The lettering is fine and set in a narrow column, and the words are too small to read clearly at this size. The background is plain and pale, with soft, even lighting that keeps the focus on the tattoo and the skin.

Dear Ada, the wire to the islands has been dead since the gale, so I am writing this by hand, which you always said was the only honest way to say anything. Mr Pascoe has the key now and I have been put on the signal hut, where the only work is logging gulls.

Then on Tuesday a message came through from St Mary's, sent in a rush by someone who did not trust the sea. Mr Pascoe would not take it down, so it fell to me. The sender had run every word into the next with no spaces, and the sheet only held one line at a time, so I wrote it straight down the page, one fragment under another, a narrow column like a ladder going up a wall.
I could not read all of it. I got the first word, which was a name I half knew, and a last word that might have been 'harbour' or 'hunger' depending on how you tilted your head. Everything between was the sea talking. I sent it up to the Scilly office anyway, column and all, because a thing that cannot be read is still a thing someone meant.
They wired back that it was nonsense. I have kept my copy folded in my apron pocket, and every evening I unfold it and run my finger down the letters, and I am beginning to think the sea knew exactly what it was saying. Come down when the line is mended. Bring a better pencil.
