Script on ribs and pocket watch sleeve
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A cropped photograph of a torso in a navy bikini, showing black script lettering across the side of the ribs and a full sleeve on the left arm. The sleeve has fine shaded detail including a pocket watch on a chain and feather-like forms, all in black and grey. The face is not visible, and the soft, even lighting against a pale background keeps the tattoos clearly readable.

The watch stopped the night the Marigold cleared the Horn, and you did not tell the captain. You wound it every morning at four bells with the brass key your father left you, holding it to your ear the way he taught you, listening for the small honest tick that kept you honest about where the ship was. Off the Falklands it went quiet for the first time in nineteen years.

Mr Okonkwo, the second mate, found you on the foredeck with the case open in your palm and a grey feather from a passing albatross caught in the lanyard. He asked nothing. He had sailed with men who lost their clocks and their nerve in the same week. Instead he took the chain from your fingers, turned the case over, and read the engraving aloud into the wind: 'Keep your course, keep your count.'
You spent the next three days doing sums in the back of the logbook, reckoning position from the sun and the slow swing of the stars, and you found the ship was further east than the chart allowed. The watch had not been broken at all. It had been telling you the truth, and you had not wanted to hear it.
When you finally wound it, on the morning they raised the rock at Port Stanley, it ticked as loud as a hammer on an anvil. Mr Okonkwo grinned and handed you the pen. Write it down, he said. Write down where we are.
