Geometric arm tattoo, woman in black lace lingerie
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A slim torso and arm are shown against a plain pale background, with the face cropped out of frame. A black ink tattoo wraps around the outer arm in a band of angular geometric shapes and triangular patterns, with fine solid and hatched linework. The image is in colour, but the only colour is the warm skin tones, the blonde hair and the black lingerie, while the tattoo itself is black and grey.

Dear Ada, the theodolite came off the cart at Scar Fell this morning with the lens fogged solid, so I spent the first hour wiping breath off brass while Pritchard swore at the wind. By noon the sky had cleared to a hard blue and I could see the whole chain of them laid out to the north: four peaks, and a fifth squatting behind like a sleeping dog. Each one sits in a neat triangle with the next, and I have drawn them on the back of the ledger so often the paper has gone soft at the joins.

Pritchard thinks the triangles are a kind of prayer, the way the Admiralty men talk about their meridian. I told him a triangle is only a promise that three things will keep their places. Measure one side, measure two angles, and the third side follows without argument. That is the whole secret of the trade. Nothing wanders if you fix three points and refuse to lie about the angles.
Our last station is a cairn with a brass bolt sunk in its top. Tonight I laid my palm on the cold metal and felt the frost lines running down the slope toward the valley where you are, fine as pen strokes, hatched close where the wind has scoured them. I wrote the bearing in the book: north by east, a quarter turn, the ridge bent like a folded arm. When I come down I will bring the ledger and show you that every line closes, every corner meets its neighbour, and no part of the country has been left to chance.
