Script phrase above the waistband

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a thin cursive script tattoo reading I believe in miracles across the lower back. The linework is fine and even, with solid black strokes and no shading. The wording sits horizontally above the waistband of light-wash denim jeans, with the rest of the skin softly blurred in the background.

The vet came Tuesday for Blossom, the grey mare with the bad hock, and he said she'd not see the spring. I didn't argue with him. I sat in the straw with her head in my lap and told her what you used to say about the Ashby boys stealing apples, and she didn't flick an ear, but her breath went slow and even like she was listening. Mum says the mare is past help. I wrote the words on the back of my wrist in biro so I'd stop talking nonsense to the cattle, but they're still there, fading under my sleeve: I believe in miracles.

If you're reading this from wherever the postman can't reach, put in a good word for the mare. And if you can't manage that, tell me the trick with the frozen gate latch, because I've been kicking it for an hour and the ice is winning.

Your loving granddaughter, Hettie
