Script quote on a thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a person's outer thigh showing a handwritten-style script tattoo in black ink that reads Not all those who wander are lost. The linework is thin and even, and the lettering runs diagonally across the upper thigh. The image has a warm, soft tone with a blurred light background, and a grey-blue shirt and part of a hand with dark nail polish are visible at the edges.

Still, I have been thinking about what Mr Hale said at the market, that anyone who goes off the paths is a fool or a poet. I told him I was neither, only short of sugar. He did not smile. He said the old map-makers used to write that line in the margins of their sheets, where the ink ran out, and that it was meant as a comfort to the men who went in after them.
So do not fret if the next letter is late. I have a pencil, a loaf and a good sense of which way the sun goes down. I will be home for the lambing, and if the spring is there I shall bring you a cup of it, cold enough to make your teeth ache.
