Typewriter quote tattoo along the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a line of text in a black typewriter-style font, set vertically down the side of the ribcage and reading she believed she could so she did. The letters are solid black with clean edges and even spacing, and the words are broken across lines with a small full stop at the end. The image is in black and grey tones, with the wearer's dark top and lace bra framing the tattoo against pale skin.

The Imperial had jammed on the letter R again, and Maud Fennick would not be told it was the ribbon. She sat with her elbows squared and her fingers resting on the keys while Dennis Ostle eased the carriage back with a bent hatpin. Nothing was wrong with the machine, he said. It was the spacing bar that had gone soft from forty years of one woman's thumb.

The typewriter had been her husband's, bought secondhand from a solicitor's office in Halifax the winter before the wedding. She typed the parish newsletter on it, and letters to the agricultural board that never answered back, and on Thursday evenings she typed out cards for her granddaughter Ruth, who was leaving in September for nursing training in Leeds and had said, twice, that she didn't think she was the sort. Each card had the same five words and a full stop, struck hard enough to dent the card.
Dennis finished the adjustment and set the hatpin down. He asked why she kept typing the same line, and Maud said a machine only does what the hand tells it, and she had got tired of Ruth's hand doing the telling.
She pulled the last card from the roller and held it to the window, where the frost was lifting off the yard in grey patches. Then she read it aloud to the empty kitchen, stopping at the full stop the way she always had, so that it would be heard as a sentence and not just a wish.
