Script quotation across a back
Lettering · Back · Colour · Photo
A bare back and side are shown lying down, with a line of cursive script in teal ink running diagonally from the lower left up towards the shoulder. The lettering has fine, even linework with a slightly uneven, handwritten character, and the words are set with wide spacing between them. The single ink colour stands out against the skin, and the dark background keeps the focus on the text.

Mrs Agnes Pollard had kept the pawnshop on Lockyer Street for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had brought in a thing they did not need to be rid of. So when young Tom Haskett laid a tin box on the counter and asked for nothing but a receipt, she knew the box was the wrong weight before she opened it.

Inside lay a silver watch that had stopped at a quarter past four, a bundle of letters tied with blue tape, and a pressed fern. The letters were addressed to a Mrs Ruth Haskett in Whitby, all in one careful hand, and none of them had been posted. "Your mother's?" Agnes asked. Tom shook his head and said his father had carried the box through the Westbury Mill strike and never once taken the lid off.
She read the top letter standing at the counter while the gas hissed in the back room. It was a list of things he meant to buy her when the pay came through: a pair of gloves, a bag of sugared plums, a house with a green door. At the bottom, underlined twice, he had written the words from the old Gospel that his chapel mother used to keep above the stove, about treasure and hearts. Agnes folded the letter along its creases and, for the first time in years, did not write a price on anything.
She gave Tom back the box with the watch wound and ticking, and kept the fern for herself.
