Script quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a three-line quotation in cursive script: The pain you feel today is the strength you'll have, with the word Tomorrow set below it between two curled flourishes. The lettering is done in fine black linework with thin, even strokes and some shading in the letters. The ink is black on pale skin, and the text is centred across a close crop of the forearm against a plain background.

Dear Kerry, I meant to say more by the buffet at the reunion, but you were holding a paper plate as if it owed you money, and the moment slipped away the way moments do in school halls. Your coat was gone from the cloakroom hook before the speeches finished, so I assume you had a train to catch. I hope the evening was kinder to you than the raffle was.

I keep thinking about the Tuesday mornings at Bexley baths. Six o'clock, the tiles still sweating, the lane ropes slapping the wall whenever the boiler kicked in. You trained harder than anyone I coached in thirty years and never once asked me to go easier. Your shoulders would be shaking by the fourth length, and you'd grip the rail and say, 'Again, Miss.' I wrote the sets on the whiteboard with a squeaky green marker, and when they got ugly I'd add a little curl under the last line, a silly habit I never explained.
At the county final in 1998 you finished fourth by a fingertip. You climbed out crying, and I told you the thing I always told you. You rolled your eyes at me then, and I didn't blame you. I have wondered since whether you ever came round to it. Your name is still on the club board in the foyer, in white capitals gone yellow at the edges. I'm leaving it up.
Bring a towel next time, and bring your shoulders. Tomorrow's pool is always colder than you expect, but it's the only one that's open. Love, Pam.
