Script quote across upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black script tattoo reads With pain comes strength in a flowing, joined-up hand across the upper back, angled slightly upwards from left to right. The linework is thin and even, with some variation in weight along the swooping letter strokes, and the ink appears solid and crisp. The photograph is greyscale, with the skin softly lit and the tattoo set in the centre of the frame against a blurred background.

Dear Tom, the rain has been coming sideways across the Corn Exchange all week and the lettering on my board has lifted at the corners again, so I am writing this on the back of a wholesale invoice with the good pen, which you will tell me is a waste of ink. Mrs Okonedo at the fish stall asked whether I could paint her a sign with something proper on it, not just prices. I gave her the line Dad used to mutter when he was up the ladder with a brush in his teeth: with pain comes strength. She laughed and said it sounded like a dentist.

She wants it in the joined-up hand, the one he taught us on the back of cereal packets, loops climbing uphill as if they are trying to get out of the weather. Every stroke has to be thin at the start and fat in the middle, and you cannot rush the join between the p and the a or it looks like a stammer. I spent Tuesday on the first two words alone and binned four boards.
The spacing is what I keep thinking about. When you lay a line like that you have to trust the gap you leave, because the eye fills it in on its own. I think that is the lesson I should have given you when you walked out, not the one about shutting doors quietly. Come down on Saturday. The board will be up by then, and the rain should be off if the forecast is anything to go by.
