Script quote across the shoulder blade
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a fine line script quote in black ink, set in two slanting lines across the upper back near the shoulder blade. The linework is thin and even, with the letters flowing into one another and some lines of the lettering slightly heavier than others. The skin tone is warm from the lighting, and a red tank top and white bra strap frame the edge of the composition.

Sit close, the pair of you, and mind the fire, because it wants feeding and I'll not tell this twice. They brought him up in the afternoon. Mari Rhys washed him herself in the scullery, the way she'd washed her own father, and she wouldn't let the undertaker near. Afterwards she sat by the range for three nights with the back door unbolted, because her mother always said a man should find his own way in, and she had been raised to be practical about such things.
On the fourth night the latch lifted. Cold air came along the flags, then the smell of wet slate and paraffin, and a light moved across the dresser where the good plates were kept. She didn't turn round. She said his name once, low, the way you'd call a dog in from the wet, and the lamp dipped as if someone had nodded.
By morning the door was bolted again and the fire was out. Mari walked up the lane to the chapel with a chalk stub in her coat pocket and wrote on the lintel, small, where only the family would know to look: Those that love us. The rest of the line she left for the rain to finish, and it did, slowly, over the winter.
