Script phrase above the collarbone
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small black script tattoo reads "you and i always" in a slanted, joined cursive across the upper chest, just below the collarbone and close to the shoulder. The linework is thin and even, with the letters solid and crisp against the skin. The photograph is taken at close range against a dark top, which frames the lettering in the centre of the image.

Dear Ivy,

The frost came early this year and took the dahlias before I could lift them, so I spent Sunday on my knees in the bed by the wall, sorting tubers into newspaper with Dad's old trowel. You will laugh, but I found the seed tin he kept under the potting bench. Tucked under the lid is a card in Mum's hand, looped and slanting the way she wrote everything, including the shopping lists she left on the fridge. Sweet peas, Grandad's blue. Then, underneath, as if she had been interrupted: you and i always.
I have been trying to decide whether she meant the sweet peas or us. You always said she meant the sweet peas, and perhaps you were right, since she could never leave a label bare. But the card was folded behind the spare packets, and the ink has faded more on the first words than on the last, so someone must have read it a great many times, probably with a cup of tea going cold beside them.
I sowed the blue ones in the greenhouse this morning, in the cracked tray with the chipped corner. They are the only things left in this garden that she planted, and I mean to see them through to the fence. Come up at Easter if you can. Bring the good secateurs, the ones you borrowed in 1998 and never gave back.
Love, Maud
