Scripture quote in fine script along a foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot shows a long line of black cursive script tattoo, running from the ankle across the top of the foot towards the toes. The thin, even linework reads as a single scripture quote about a lamp and a light guiding the path. The tattoo is shown in sharp focus against a plain grey floor, with a ring visible on one toe.

Sit closer, the fire will not keep itself, and you will want your ears warm for this one. It was the winter the abbey ran out of tallow, the winter Brother Ansel was given the lamp-house by the causeway and told to keep it lit from Compline to first bell, whatever the weather. Nobody had told him the water would come up over the stones that January, so that a man could not cross without a light or drown in the reeds.

Ansel kept it lit. He trimmed the wick with the little iron scissors his mother had given him, rubbed goose grease into his cracked hands, and sat in the stone hut counting the hours on a knotted cord. Each night the lamp threw its yellow circle onto the black water, and each night he watched the circle shrink and swell as the wind leaned on the shutter. Wardens came across from the far shore in the dark, cursing and calling his name. They found their way by that small gold coin of light, one step at a time, and not one of them thought to thank the lamp.
One night a girl came across alone, carrying a bundle of eels for the infirmary and no lantern of her own. She stopped at the hut door, breathing hard, and asked how he could bear to be only the thing other people walked by. Ansel said no one had ever asked him that. He lifted the lamp from its hook, put it into her cold hands, and told her to go on. She went, slipping on the weed, and he stood in the doorway with nothing but the dark.
Come morning the lamp was back on its hook, filled, trimmed and warm to the touch. Beside it lay a single eel wrapped in a cabbage leaf, and in the frost on the step ran a line of small boot prints leading back towards the abbey gate. Ansel never learned who had walked the causeway that night. The next winter he taught a boy to trim the wick, and the boy kept the lamp, and that is how the path has been lit ever since.
