Two parallel lines around a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a bare forearm and hand against a plain brown backdrop, with the wearer's green knit sleeve bunched above the elbow. Two thin, uniform black lines run horizontally around the forearm in a simple band, drawn with clean, even linework and no shading. The ink is solid black and the composition is minimal, with the arm angled diagonally across the frame.

The bread was already a day late when Marguerite started cutting the loaves for the tide-keepers, and the lamp over the pass had gone out twice in the night. Nobody on the lighthouse rock thought much about the lines of soot Old Pell had scratched on the stair wall, one for every storm, until the year two of them came in the same week.

She wiped her hands on her apron and looked at the ledger hung by the door. Pell's hand was shaky now, but it still made its marks straight, and he had told her once that a band drawn around a thing kept it from wandering. He had drawn two bands on his own wrist with a sharpened nail the winter his wife went across to the mainland and did not come back on the boat. He never explained them. He just kept them there, one above the other, as if measuring how far a bit of rope could be stretched before it parted.
On the last morning of the gale she carried the kettle up the stair, past the wall of soot lines, and found him at the window with his sleeve pushed high. The boat was out there, a grey speck coming round the reef. He held his arm up against the light and ran a finger along the two marks, as if checking they were still level. Then he gave a short nod, the sort a man gives a tide that has turned in his favour, and let the sleeve fall back down over the lines.
