Script quote and spiral sun on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line script reads 'You are my sunshine' across the side of the ankle, with a small spiral sun drawn to the right of the final word. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The photograph is in black and white, shot close up on a light textured surface, with the foot and heel filling the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad went down at half five, the way he always did, and I was up before the kettle to watch him lace his boots by the range. The lamp hung on its hook by the door with its glass smoked grey. I had my slate on my knees because Miss Pryce said we had to copy a line each morning, and I'd picked the one Mam used to sing when the rain came sideways off the tips.

I wrote it in careful capitals at first, then joined the letters up the way she did, loopy and quick. YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE. Dad read it upside down from the step. He said the S was lying down, and I said it was sleeping, and he laughed the cough laugh that meant the dust was in him again. Then he took the chalk stub from my fingers and drew a sun beside the last word, a spiral going round and round like a snail that had decided to be bright.

"That's so you know where I'll be," he said. I told him the pit was under the ground and the sun was up in the sky, which made no sense, and he said that was exactly why it needed drawing. Then he went out past the pump, and the cage bell rang down at Carnhope No. 2 three streets over, and I could hear it through the wall.

At dinnertime the slate was still on the table. I rubbed the words out with my sleeve because Miss Pryce would want it clean, but I left the sun. Nobody told me to. Some mornings I still draw it, round and round, and wait for the bell to ring the other way.
