You are my sunshine script with a sun
Lettering · Other · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo reading 'You are my sunshine' in flowing red script across two lines. A small sun with short rays sits beside the final word. The linework is clean and even, with the letters sharing a consistent weight, and the single ink colour sits flatly on warm, slightly blurred skin. The top edge of the frame shows a ribbed grey garment, and the image has a warm, vintage-style tone.

He always said the saucepan method made the tea taste of tin and ambition, and that a proper pot was a moral obligation. I poured two mugs anyway and put one on the windowsill where he used to leave his, the chipped one with the lighthouse on it.

The box from the loft was still on the table. Inside, under a pile of Christmas cards nobody had sent, I found the old cardboard sign from the allotment shed, the one he painted the summer I was nine. The letters had run in the rain, but you could still read the sun he'd drawn beside the last word, with its little spokes like it was about to leap off the board. He used to say it was the only thing he'd ever got exactly right on the first go.
I took a photo of it on my phone and sent it to my brother in Leeds with no message. Ten minutes later he rang, not saying anything, just breathing down the line the way he did when we were small and frightened of the dark. Then he said, "Bring the sign to Sunday lunch. We'll hang it where the light gets in." I told him the kettle was broken. He said we'd manage.
