Script quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black script tattoo on the forearm reads find what you love above love what you find, set in a flowing, ornate hand with looped flourishes at either end. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The arm is photographed against a weathered wooden fence in neutral daylight, with the tattoo centred on the frame.

The band packs up at eleven, but you stay on the sprung floor with a broom, sweeping chalk dust into the gutters where the lights don't reach. Gerald, who has run the Palais Azure on Mill Street since before the war, is counting the float in the office with the door open, humming something by Glenn Miller under his breath.

On the noticeboard by the cloakroom is a card you wrote last spring and never took down. It is in your own careful hand: find what you love, love what you find. You wrote it for the new girl at the Tuesday classes, the one who counted under her breath and never once looked up from her feet. She had a laugh like a dropped tray and no idea yet that she was good at this.
She came back the next week and the week after that. By June she was leading the foxtrot for the older men who came in for the tea urn and stayed for the waltz. Last Thursday she pencilled a note in the corner of the card, asking whether you still had the dance card from the first night. You do. It is in the drawer with the cufflinks and the broken metronome.
Gerald switches off the office light. You hear the bolt slide on the side door, and then nothing but the hum of the fridge and the wooden floor settling under your shoes.
