Script quote on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm with a two-line handwritten script quote in black ink. The thin, flowing linework has varying stroke weight, and the letters are crisp and evenly spaced. The skin tone is warm and the background is a soft, out-of-focus cream with pale vertical drapery.

Dear Tomas,

The lamp is guttering again and the printers on Gallowgate have shut their presses for the night, so the only noise left in Newcastle is gulls fighting over the bins below my window. I have spent the evening at the bench with your mother's Bible on one side and your unfinished letter on the other. You asked me to keep the spine tight, so I have sewn it three times over, linen thread through every signature, the way she taught me.
I know what you will say. You will say a book is only paper that agrees to stay shut. But I keep thinking of the sheets you sent from Valparaiso, folded small and smelling of tar, each one trying to get farther from me than the last. Every page wants to wander. That is the whole trouble with paper, and with men.
So I have written the words on the endpaper in my roughest hand, the one you laughed at when we were children, and I am pasting them inside the cover where no one will read them but whoever opens it next. Bind my wandering heart to thee. It is not a prayer. It is an order from a woman who has run out of other ways to keep you.
Come home before the frost takes the tallow. I will leave the door on the latch and the lamp lit, and I will not ask you to stay longer than the tide.
