The understudy had been sick in the gents' at the Corn Exchange, so at a quarter to eight I was pushed onto the boards with my hair still pinned up from the laundry and the prompt book clutched to my chest like a hot-water bottle. Mr Pryce had promised me a single line. He had not promised the whole of the wood scene, with two grown men who kept stepping on each other's cues and a Lysander who could not find his own feet.

I had prompted that company for eleven years from the dark side of the proscenium, and I knew every word they were supposed to say. Knowing them and saying them under gaslight are different matters. The tall ones looked down at me as though I were a parcel delivered to the wrong door. So when the scene called for Helena to stand up for herself, I stood up for myself, and I gave the house the line as if I had written it. Though she be but little, she is fierce. The stalls went quiet. Somebody at the back of the circle laughed, and then so did I, and nobody in the wings could find a cough sweet to stop either of us.

Afterwards Mr Pryce did not apologise, which I respected more than I would have an apology. He only tapped the prompt book and said I would have the part on Saturday if I wanted it. I said I preferred the cupboard. The next morning, when I opened the book to check the blocking, I found a pencilled note in the margin in his cramped hand: Ada, do the wood scene again. Be fierce. I left it there and never rubbed it out.
