Script quote about dawn on inner wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a black script quote, I'll rise like the break of dawn, set in flowing connected lettering on the inner forearm close to the wrist. A soft, blurred grey shading sits above the first line, suggesting clouds. The ink is solid black with clean, even linework, and the words are stacked in a centred column against a pale skin tone and a plain, light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had sat on Hallow Ridge for three days, and on the morning of Mared Pryce's wedding it still hung there, grey as wet wool. Her father sent the youngest Pryce boy up the lane to fetch the vicar, who had gone to the chapel to pray for fair weather and had not come back. The boy found him on the stile, soaked to the skin, saying the cloud would not lift until someone gave it a reason.

The old woman who kept the well said a storm only breaks for a promise. So Mared pinned up her skirts, put on her wedding shoes, and climbed the ridge before the sun was up. She carried nothing but the words she had been saying to herself since she was a girl, which were that she would rise each day the way the dawn does, slow at first and then all at once, whether anyone was watching or not.

At the top the cloud was cold enough to bite her hands. She spoke the words into it. For a long while nothing happened, and she thought she had made a fool of herself in front of the sheep. Then a thin seam of pale light opened low in the east, and the cloud along the ridge peeled back in grey curls, stacked like fleece on a fence.

She came down with the sun on her shoulders and found the chapel full, the miller's son standing at the front with his hat in his hands. Her father asked what she had promised. She said she had promised to get up every morning, and that the cloud had believed her.
