Script quote on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's forearm carries the words "it's real for us" in a thin, flowing cursive script. The linework is fine and even, in a single dark ink with no shading, and the lettering runs diagonally across the arm. The background shows a striped top and a patterned wall, with the subject's face and head cropped out of frame.

It was never a story. I have decided that. This afternoon I climbed up to the lantern room with the oil can under my arm and scratched it into the inside of the glass with a hatpin, small and slanting, so the next keeper who wipes the panes will read it when the beam swings across: it's real for us. Mrs Anstey says the glass belongs to the Northern Lights Board and I am a vandal. Let her write to them.
Come home at Michaelmas or don't, but send word either way. I will keep the kettle warm and the wick trimmed, and if your boat comes in on the evening tide I will be the one on the wall, not pretending to read.
