Script quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm carries a quotation in flowing black script, with the lines set diagonally from the upper arm down towards the wrist. The letters have smooth, even black linework with solid fill and slight grey softening at the edges. The photograph is taken indoors under warm light, with a grey shirt sleeve and a window at the edge of the frame.

The rain came into Harrowgate market the same week the bell cracked, and nobody thought to mend either. Old Ada Penrose kept her fish stall under a tarpaulin that sagged like a wet sail, and every morning she wrote the day's prices on a slate in chalk that the rain took off before noon.

Her grandson Piers would not stand still in the wet. He wanted to go to the coast, where the ships paid in silver, and Ada wanted him to stay under the tarpaulin with her. She gave him the good knife and the last of the dry flour and said nothing about the bread she had stopped eating two winters back. When the flood came down the High Street on a Thursday, it was Ada who stood in the gutter with her arms out, holding the fish crates against the current, while the others climbed the steps of the corn exchange.
They found her in the morning with the crates still wedged against her knees. Piers came back from the coast a year later with silver in a leather purse and an unfamiliar way of standing. He set the purse on the slate where the prices had been, and someone had already chalked over the old figures in careful capitals that the rain had not yet found.
Piers did not open the purse. He wiped the slate with his sleeve and wrote the only line his grandmother had ever put there that was not a price. The rain fell on the empty stall all afternoon, and the words stayed where he had left them.
