Fine line black script reading 'Not all those who wander are lost' across the outer thigh of a person in a denim shirt.

Script quote on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a thigh showing a quotation in thin black script, set in two lines that run slightly upward from left to right. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink reads as dark grey against the skin. The person wears a light denim shirt, with one hand holding the hem at the waistband, and the soft, pale background keeps the focus on the lettering.

Walter's card came on a Tuesday, the back of an old ration book folded so often it had gone soft as cloth. Maud read it twice at the bus stop outside the Mariner's Hall, where the band was tuning up through the open doors. Gone up to the fells with the survey party, back by Michaelmas. Beneath it he had written the line he always wrote when he couldn't say the rest: Not all those who wander are lost. The letters leaned uphill, as if the hand were climbing out of a ditch.

Inside, the floor was already chalked for the Saturday waltz. Harold the postman trod on her hem twice before the first chorus and said, not unkindly, that map-makers always turned up with a compass and a sandwich and a good excuse. Maud laughed and let him lead, but she counted the bars under her breath and kept her eyes on the door.

Michaelmas came and went. In October she walked the old drover's road past Scarth with the card in her coat pocket and the mist sitting on the moor like wet wool. She found his survey pegs first, painted red, then a tin mug with his initials scratched into the handle. Under a flat stone sat a note in that uphill hand: Gone down by the east beck. Don't trust the cairn, it's wrong.

She followed the beck anyway. At dusk the lamp of the hall's back kitchen came swimming up through the grey, and Walter was at the sink with his boots off and his socks steaming on the rail. He turned as if he had been expecting her all along. Maud set the wet map case down on the table between them and asked him, very calmly, which way was lost.
