Script quote on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm and hand resting on a teal leather car seat. The forearm carries a single line of black cursive script that reads God is still working on me, drawn with thin, even linework. The image is in cool blue tones, with the tattoo as the clear focal point against the skin.

Past the last well on the Caliz road, where the tar gives out and the sand starts walking across it, there is a carved man leaning on a sign that says nothing. Everyone who drove that road in the old days knew him. Nobody knew who had made him, only that the chisel marks ran all the way up his arms and stopped short of his face.

A woman called Hanne Doru came out from the coast with a mule and a box of tools, saying she would finish him for the price of one night's water. The men at the well laughed at her. She worked through the spring with her sleeves rolled and a cloth over her mouth against the grit, and each evening she sat on her heels and looked at what she had done. Every morning she picked up the chisel again, sure there was one more cut to make before he was right.
By autumn the wind had taken the skin off her knuckles and the men had stopped laughing. One dusk a driver stopped to ask if she meant to finish before she died. She said she would be finished before he was, and that was the wrong way round, since he was only stone and could wait. He asked what she was waiting for. She said she was waiting to know what he was for.
She died in the first frost, still at the shoulder. The well men buried her under the sign. When the next rains came they found the statue's face had been cut at last, just barely, a brow and a mouth no deeper than a fingernail, as if whoever worked there had only paused to breathe. The driver said it was the best work on the road, and that it was still not done.
