Fine line script quote on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on a teal leather seat, showing a thin black script phrase tattooed along the inner forearm towards the wrist. The linework is clean and even with no shading, and the lettering runs diagonally across the arm. The teal seat and seatbelt buckle in the background make up the rest of the frame, with soft natural light.

Sit closer, the fire is low and I have not got the breath I had at your age. You want the story of the stone in the north cloister, the one with the unfinished face. Good. Hush now.

Brother Osric was the mason here when the roof was new, and he was a man who could not leave a thing alone. Every spring he climbed the ladder to the bare saint standing in the cloister niche, a figure with one hand lifted, and every spring he took his chisel and knocked off another flake of grey stone. The abbot told him the saint was finished. Osric said no, he is still being worked on. Brother Hild, who kept the almonry accounts and had a sharp tongue, said it was vanity, not piety, that kept the chisel going.
So the years went round. The lifted hand got fingers, then lost them again to the frost. Osric died in a January with dust still in his beard, and the saint was left as it was, half a face and a palm turned to the sky. Nobody touched it after that.
Now here is the part they do not tell the novices. When the cloister was swept the spring after his burial, a boy named Tobias found a chip of stone lying at the saint's feet, no bigger than a thumbnail, and cut on its face was a single letter, neat as a stitch. Brother Hild could read the old hand, and he said it was the start of a word, and that the word was only, "still". I have always thought Osric meant to finish the sentence and simply ran out of days.
