Black script lettering on an upper arm reads Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, then Love leaves a memory no one can steal.

Script quote on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a two-part quote set in large, flowing black script with smaller italic lines between the main words. The lettering uses solid, smooth strokes with soft shading on the letter edges, and the text runs down the outside of the upper arm. The skin is lit evenly against a grey T-shirt sleeve, and the composition is tightly framed on the arm.

Harbourmaster Pryce took his cap off on the quay and would not meet my eye, which told me everything before he opened his mouth. I am writing this at the kitchen table because I cannot yet sit in the front room where his chair is.

Everyone keeps saying the sea takes what it wants, and I suppose it does. But on Tuesday I found his stub of carpenter's pencil wedged behind the tea caddy, the one he sharpened with his pocket knife every night before bed. He had drawn a crooked gull on the back of the rates demand, its wings all wrong, and I sat down on the lino and laughed like a fool until I wasn't laughing any more. A man can't draw himself back out of the Channel, Nell. But he left me that, and nobody can take it off me.

Mrs Gwyn at the chandlery says the ache will ease if I let it. I told her I'd rather keep the heartache than have a clean slate, because the heartache is at least his. She looked at me as if I'd gone soft in the head, and maybe I have. The tide leaves wrack along the harbour wall every week, and every week the men sweep it into a pile and it comes back anyway.

Come down on Sunday and bring the good kettle. We'll walk out to the end of the wall where he always stopped to count the gulls, and I'll show you the drawing. It's pinned above the sink now, gull and all, crooked as ever.
