Fine black script lettering reading Live nothing but love across the upper chest of a shirtless torso.

Script quote on upper chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a shirtless torso showing a black script tattoo that reads Live nothing but love with an ellipsis, running diagonally across the upper chest near the collarbone. The lettering is thin and uniform with a fine, flowing line, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The warm, soft lighting and angled framing show the chest and abdomen, with a wrist bracelet and a waistband visible below.

Dear Tomasz, the postmaster in Halvard says the relief barge will not dock before the thaw, so this letter goes out with the salt cart instead, folded inside the tally book where the customs men never look. I have spent three evenings trying to write the sentence you asked for, the one about the lamp at Scarrow Point, and every version comes out sounding like a ledger.

The keeper's girl, Ada, rowed out on Tuesday with a basket of bread and asked me what the words on the bell-buoy meant. Somebody scratched them there before the war, she said, and the rust has nearly eaten them. I told her they were a sailor's promise. She said that was a poor promise, since nobody could keep it, and she was right, but I liked her for saying so.

I went out at dusk with the brass wire brush and cleaned the buoy until the letters showed through: Live nothing but love. The dots at the end had been cut deep, three of them, as if the carver had meant to finish the thought when he came back. I stood on the slick deck and read it twice, and then I understood that you were never going to finish it either, not in writing.

So here is the sentence, finished by me, in plain ink: come home before the ice closes the channel, bring the good needle for the sail, and leave the rest of the ledger to the gulls. Ada says she will carry this to the cart herself. Yours, Ilse.
