Fine line symbols down the upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a person's bare upper back, with the head turned away and hair visible at the top left. A diagonal line of thin, single-weight black linework forms a row of simple symbols: crosses, chevrons and dots. The lines are clean and even on smooth skin, and the composition is centred on the tattoo against a soft, dark background.

Old Tam Ferrier called the figures at the Lantern Hall every Saturday from the year the river froze until the year it did not. He could not read, but he could count, and he kept his count in a row of marks he scratched into the lintel above the stove with a nail: a cross for a turn, a chevron for a changing of hands, a dot for the pause before the fiddle came back in.

Nell Brough came to the hall the winter her mother went to the infirmary in Carlisle. She was twelve and too proud to ask anyone to show her the dances, so she sat on the bench by the door and learned them from the marks, because the marks never changed and people did.
One night the fiddler from Alston stopped in the middle of the Dowager's Reel with his bow still lifted. The floor went still. Tam looked at the lintel and then at Nell, and she understood that the tune had run out before the count did. She stood, walked to the middle of the boards, and danced the figure that came next, one she had never seen anyone dance, because she had read it: cross, chevron, chevron, dot. The fiddler found the tune again by following her feet.
Tam scratched one more mark that night, a cross with nothing after it, and told her the count was hers to keep. She kept it for forty years. When she died the hall had a new roof and a new stove, but someone had cut the lintel from the old beam and hung it above the door, and the last mark on it was a dot with nothing after, which the caller still waits for before he lifts his hand.
