The lamp at Skerrow Head had been fitted with its new lens in March, and by October Thomas Venn still caught himself squinting at the brass as if it might turn on him. He sat at the kitchen table with the ledger open and a letter half written, the nib drying while the kettle ticked on the range.

Dear Ada, he wrote, then crossed out the line because it sounded like a sermon. The supply boat was late again. The relief keeper's wife had sent a tin of shortbread that tasted of the tin. Outside, the sea put its shoulder against the rocks in the same slow way it had every night for eleven years, and he had stopped expecting it to change.

Ada had gone to Leith with a man who sold sewing machines and promised her a shop. Thomas had read her letter twice, then once more, searching for the place where he might have answered differently. Above the mantel hung a card in his own hand, from the winter she taught him to letter properly: Live nothing but love. He had never decided whether she meant it as a dare or a plea.

At midnight he climbed the iron stairs to trim the wick and found the glass beaded with spray, the beam sweeping out over water with no ships on it. He wiped the panes with his sleeve until the light ran clean. Down in the kitchen the kettle had boiled dry. He let it be.

In the morning he finished the letter with one sentence and folded it without reading it back. He would give it to the boat. Some things did not need a second draft.
