Script quote reading Someday came suddenly
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A black script tattoo reads Someday came suddenly across the upper chest, close to the collarbone. Small faint marks, possibly stars or dots, sit above the words. The lettering is thin, neat and uniformly black, with no shading or colour, and the text fills the centre of the frame against plain skin, with dark hair falling over the left shoulder.

Dear Marguerite,

The ferry was late again, so I sat on the harbour wall at Scarra with your tin of shortbread and watched the gulls fight over a crust. The boatman says the weather will turn by Thursday, which means it will turn tonight. I have not told Father that I sold the blue dinghy to the Macleod boy for eleven pounds and a promise to return the oars. He will find out when he goes looking for them.
You asked in your last letter what it was like, waiting out the years for the mainland to send word about Tom. I wrote you a dozen answers and burned them all in the range. The truth is that nothing happened for a long time, and then the telegram came on a Tuesday, when I was counting stitches in the church hall, and the whole room went quiet around me. Someday came suddenly, Mrs Ross said, patting my hand, as though she had written the line herself.
I keep thinking about that. How the years were so patient and then everything was rushed at once. I have stopped trying to make sense of it. Tom is coming in on the Friday boat, and I have already pressed my good blouse and hung it on the back of the door, where the light from the window falls across it like something alive.
Write soon. Tell me the gulls have stopped following you.
Your sister, Eilidh
