Script quote tattoo across a woman's back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with a high blonde ponytail is photographed from behind, wearing a sage green romper with an open back and flared sleeves. A fine black script quote runs vertically down the centre of her upper back, with the words hard to read at this size. The tattoo is set against smooth skin on a plain white garage door background, with a tan leather bag over one shoulder.

Dear Nell,

The 6.40 was late again, so I have had time to finish this one properly, sitting on the bench under the clock where you used to swing your boots. Mr Pargeter has painted the canopy brackets green since you left, and the stationmaster says the new timetable board will go up in March, though I will believe it when I see the numbers. Everything else is the same. The tea urn still hisses like a kettle that has been insulted.

I went through your room on Sunday. Under the loose board by the window I found the tin with the postcards from Lisbon and the stub of a ticket for the Penzance line, dated the week before you wrote to say you were fine. I have not decided whether to be cross about that. I put the tin back where it was, which is probably what you would have wanted and certainly what I would have done at your age.

Here is the thing I came to say. The girl at the ticket window asked me this morning if I was waiting for someone. I said I was waiting for the weather to make up its mind. She laughed, and I felt foolish, and then I felt something else that I cannot name, so I am writing it down instead. Come home at Easter, or write and tell me which train to meet. I will be on the platform with the umbrella, same as always, even if the rain has given up.

Your loving sister, Maud
