The seed packets came back from the post office with their corners soft, so I had to guess at the handwriting on the back of the one you sent. You always wrote your letters running down the page instead of across it, the way a bean climbs a cane, and I have stopped pretending I can read them straight. I read them the way they grow, from the top, letting the loops lead me down until the ink runs out at the bottom of the sheet.

The clematis on the south wall has finally caught the trellis you nailed up in March. It went up in a rush after the rain, a green tangle that looks like someone in a hurry to say everything at once. The bed by the shed is ready for the sweet peas if you want to dig them in yourself. Bring the good gloves, the ones with the holes you refused to darn, because the soil is cold under the top layer and the worms are fat from the wet.

I found the old string you tied to the nail last summer, still knotted where you left it, and I have not cut it. Some mornings I stand under the wall with my tea and watch the tendrils test the air for something to hold. You will see it when you come. The stems have wound round the wire in a straight line up to the gutter, and the leaves are turned towards the house, as if they were looking for the person who put them there.
