Geometric forearm tattoo with layered necklaces

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The photograph shows a forearm and hand, with a dense black geometric pattern tattooed on the forearm and a small dark mark further up the arm. The pattern uses solid black fills and fine linework, with a repeating ornamental structure. The image is in colour, with a green t-shirt, gold necklaces including a snake pendant, beaded bracelets, and dark red nail polish, set against a plain white wall.

Dear Nell,

The knot garden is finished at last, though Mr Aske still insists the lower bed is a quarter inch out of true. I have walked the box edges with a string line three times and the corners meet every time. Yew for the dark fills, he said, and box for the fine lines, so the pattern reads from the upstairs window the way the old plan did, all interlacing and no beginning. You would hate it. You always wanted the paths to go somewhere.

The trouble came on Tuesday. We were lifting the turf at the centre and the spade turned up a bronze buckle, green as pond water, and then, under it, a snake's skin folded up like a glove someone had forgotten. Aske wanted to throw it on the bonfire. I asked him to leave it on the sill of the potting shed instead, where the light comes through the cracked pane and lays a row of bars across the bench. I cannot say why. It seemed a poor thing to burn.

This morning the skin was gone and in its place lay a single snail, very slow, following the outline of one of the box loops the whole way round until it reached where it started. I watched it for an hour. I think it has learned the pattern better than either of us.

Come in August, when the hedges have filled out. Bring the scissors. The middle needs clipping and I will not trust anyone else with the shears.

Your loving sister, Ada
