Fine line script tattoo across the upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with a long blonde ponytail stands with her back to the camera, wearing an open-back olive green playsuit and carrying a brown leather crossbody bag. A thin black script tattoo runs vertically down the centre of her upper back, though the lettering is too small to read clearly. The tattoo is rendered in crisp black linework against pale skin, set against a white garage door.

Mrs Pardoe wanted the words in gold leaf on the chapel door, and she wanted them by Saturday, which gave me four days and a bad wrist. The line was four lines long in her father's hand, folded inside a Woodbine tin, and it said less than it needed to: the sea keeps what it is given and gives back the rest. I told her it would never fit a door. She said it would fit if I was any good.

So I did what my old master taught me in a loft above a bicycle shop in Ramsgate. I stopped looking at the door and looked at the tall narrow boards we used for church notices. Letters go down, not across, when there is no width to spare. I tried a long, thin script with the capitals stretched like reeds, and the first attempt looked like a fence someone had dropped. The second looked like handwriting. On the third I let the brush run and didn't correct it.
The wedding was on the Saturday. The bride came early to see the work, and she stood in the vestry light with her gloves in one hand for a long time. Then she asked whether the last word could be smaller, as though it were being said under the breath. I said I could do that. I used the finest sable I owned, and my hand did not shake once, which surprised me more than anything else that week.
