Black fine line script lettering tattoo on a wrist, partly covered by a dark leather wrap bracelet with a gold clasp.

Script quote tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a man's wrist and hand showing a thin black script tattoo that reads as a partial phrase, with only part of the words visible. The linework is fine and even, and the ink is solid black with no colour. The wrist is wrapped in several strands of dark leather with a gold metal clasp, and the pale fabric in the background is out of focus.

Dear Mags,

The big top came down on Tuesday in Rhyl, and I watched the last of the canvas fold like a bedsheet nobody wanted to make up. Sol has sold the elephant to a farm outside Ludlow, and the lion is living in the back of the horsebox with a blanket over his cage so the rain can't get at him. Nobody says the word closing. We just keep stacking the chairs a little neater each night, as if neatness were a kind of promise.

Yesterday I found Dad's old ledger under the wardrobe trunk, the one with the gold-leaf title on the cover. On the flyleaf he'd written the company motto in that loopy hand, the one he copied off the side of the first wagon in 1961: the whole world tomorrow, and the rest of us just a rehearsal. I had always thought it was a joke. Sitting on the step of the caravan with the ledger open on my knees, I wasn't sure any more.

So I bought a pot of ink at the chemist's and a fine nib, and this morning I took the ledger down to the seafront, where the tide was going out over the sand. I wrote the line out again on the back of a flyer for a wedding we are not doing. The letters came out thin and even, the way Dad's did, and the wind kept trying to lift the page. I read it aloud to a gull. It did not clap.

Come up when you can. Bring the good saw, and tell Ruth the clowns' trailer is not haunted, it just has a leak. I am keeping the ledger. Somebody has to finish the sentence.

Love, Jess
